Decreasing stress while paying taxes
Paying your taxes can be very stressful. It is important that you take the time to understand what is going on with your taxes.
You have to start by understanding what documents you are going to need. When you sit down to file your taxes you will want to make sure that all of these documents are accessible.
You will dramatically decrease the amount of stress that you will experience. Instead of scrambling for all of the paperwork while you are in the middle of paying your taxes you will be able to file with one smooth motion.
First, you should start with the identification papers. You should have your social security number and if you are going to try to qualify for child care credits you will also need the child care provider's tax I.D.
While you are looking for the important documents that you need to file your taxes you should collect all of the employment and income data. Make sure that you have your W-2.
The W-2 should be sent from your employer. This form should not arrive any later than January 31st.
If you have not received your W-2 form you will want to contact your employer. If your employer does not provide the W-2 you will have to report the reporter.
Your accountant or your insurance company should also give you all of the documents concerning your pension and annuities. These documents should be provided easily.
If you are retired and you are not a citizen of the United States you may be receiving Social Security Benefits through the railroad retirement fund. The RRB 1099 or the RRB 10425 forms will be necessary.
If you are divorced and you are receiving alimony you will need to make sure that all of that information is filed when your ex-spouse files. Your former spouse will also need your social security number so that they can deduct their payments from their taxes.
If you have served jury duty you will need the paperwork concerning this. All of this data and paperwork should be given to you by the court clerk.
The W-2G form is necessary if you are going to file any taxes for any gambling or lottery winnings. You do not want to forget to claim these winnings.
There is a difference between gambling or lottery winnings and prizes or awards. The prizes and awards will require that you fill out the 1099-MISC form.
Receiving scholarships and fellowships is something that you will also need to make sure you file for. The 1099-MISC form will also be needed for any scholarships.
If you are a homeowner or you are renting you will also need to provide some unique information. You do not want to forget this information before you file your taxes.
First, you need to know all of your residential addresses for the entire year. Even if you have moved multiple times you will need to know the exact address.
If you have a mortgage you should also know that you need to provide the information concerning your interest when you file your taxes. This information should come from the lender.
The form that will correlate with your interest is the 1098 form. You cannot forget to fill out this form when you are filing your taxes.
If you have sold your home or any other real estate in the past year you will need to fill out the 1099-S form. This form should come from your closing agent or even your lender.
The taxes that you have paid on your real estate or on the rent that you have paid in the past year will also need to be filed for. If you are paying taxes on your rent you will need to know how much and provide this information on your own.
If you are paying real estate taxes your county clerk or even your lender should give you a copy of your information. If they do not send it when you need it make sure you call him or her to make sure that it is on it's way.
If you have been moving in the last year you can also file for the moving expenses. If your employer paid for you to move they will be able to tell you how much they paid.
Filing your taxes can be stressful, but it is important that you take the time to prepare before you file. If you prepare you will dramatically decrease the amount of stress.
