72 million people are trapped - how to reduce consumer debt
In today's society it is easy to get wrapped up in wanting the best of everything. Items that were once considered luxuries are now being offered as the latest must-haves. However, if you start using credit cards to finance the best of everything, you can find yourself in financial trouble. It is easy to accumulate debt, but repayment is much harder.
If you have accumulated some debt, as most Americans have, there are some effective ways to reduce your consumer debt. The first thing you must do is to stop incurring more debt. You will never be able to reduce your debt if you're constantly spending on credit. You should keep in mind that if you have to pull out a credit card to pay for an item, then you probably really don't need that item.
Using cash will also help you to reduce your consumer debt. If you consistently use cash, you will not be tempted to buy items that you cannot afford. If you do not have enough cash on hand to buy an item, you will not be able to buy it. And by not using credit, you can save for that item. This will help you to avoid the finance charges and other fees that you incur when you use credit.
Compare credit cards. You can easily transfer balances of higher interest cards to those with lower interest rates. Before you do this, you should call your credit card company and tell them you received an offer for a comparable credit card with a lower interest rate. Often times, the credit card company will reduce your interest rate so that you will continue to be their customer. Reducing your interest rates can save hundreds and even thousands of dollars over time.
Pay off the credit cards with the lowest balances first. The way this works is that you pay an amount larger than the minimum on the card with the lowest balance. You still maintain minimum payments on all other credit cards. This starts the snowball effect. Once the first card is paid off, take the payment you were applying to that card and add it to the minimum payment on the next card. You keep the cycle going until all your credit cards have been paid off.
Paying off debt is never easy for anyone. But, with dedication and determination, you will be able to pay off all your credit card debt. You will then reap the benefit of peace of mind and a feeling of self-worth.
